Beltaine!

So, the Beltaine rite has come and gone, and aside from some confusion on my part it all went pretty well.
Sorry to the hotties. I panicked and thought we didn't have anybody.  I knew I should have double checked with Shawn what came right before my part.  Bah.  Just once I'd like to help with public ritual where I don't leave feeling like I've flubbed something major.

However, I feel that opening and closing the gates went well.  Haha, see what I did there?  It was the part of the rite I was most comfortable with, but still nervous about, as it's kind of a big deal.

I realized as Molly and I walked out to the Maypole that we hadn't prepared thanking prayers for Belenos and Belisama.  Whoops.  So that could have been much better on my part, but I guess it wasn't too bad for off the top of my head.

Good omens though, and good times.

My band, YVTV, is playing the Billiard Club tonight (911 E. Dublin-Granville Rd, Columbus).  We're playing with some metal bands, so we're using this as an opportunity to say goodbye to some of our older, heavier material.  New stuff is almost ready and so we'll be breaking that out soon, too.
Anyhow, if you DO come out, make sure to say YVTV at the door so we get credit for your warmth.

$8/ 18-20
9pm
We're probably up first, and playing with Metalstorm and Without Bleeding Ears.

I am gramatically picky: MEME edition
futurama, robot devil

Hi guys.  You're all my friends.  This is something minor that's irritated me for a while now.  I'd like to point out the actual meaning of the net-term "meme".  I see a lot of surveys on here tagged as memes.  They're not, they're surveys.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_meme

An actual meme would be an internet fad, the jokes that spread all over the internet and get copied and reinterpreted time and again.  Some examples:

Demotivational Posters

Yo Dawg

Mosh Pit Girl

Photobombs

So yeah, I know.  I know.  It shouldn't bother me.  But it does.  I'm sorry.  And yes, I realize there is an actual word meme, too.  But it doesn't have anything to do with what I'm talking about here.

I was left with some extra time on my hands last night, and rather than waste it stumbling, I opted to sit down at the altar for the first time in too long.  I guess really it's only been 2 weeks but it seems much longer.
Anyhow, after making offerings to Garanus and each of the Kindreds, and then to Math, I was taken on an impromptu journey.  I was drawn slowly up the trunk of a tree  and deposited in front of Math, who was much warmer with me than he ever has been before.  We talked for quite a while, and he told me that my worship and prayers are heard and appreciated, and it definitely gave me the sense that he is satisfied with my commitment and what I give.  He did say that if I was wanting to become a better magician, that I needed to study and practice more, and that a good start to that would be buckling down and finishing my DP, then moving on to the Magician's Guild First Circle.  With that, he (assuming here) tapped me with his wand, and I was transformed into a crane?  That's not really the impression I got. It was more like my soul piggy-backing on to Garanus, like he was taking me for a ride.  I guess that IS his forte.  Anyhow, we soared around the astral or the cosmos or what have you, then descended back to Earth and deep into the ocean (between the Americas and Africa if you must know).  Getting to the ocean floor was certainly unsettling, especially after the light disappeared and I was just left with a sense of strange, pale, primordial creatures all around me.  Eventually, I hit the ocean floor, and sank slowly through it into the crust of the Earth.  Deeper still I went, eventually reaching the magma core of the Earth, before being rocketed up and out the top of a volcano and into the air.  From there, I sank slowly down back into my own body.

So vast
and oceans deep
is my love for you
that I pray
when we depart this mortal place
we both avoid the cup of Thoth
and decline to rise again.
Forever we run,
hand in hand,
through the verdant fields of youth.

Xianity vs. Athiesm and False Dualities

I'm getting really fed up with seeing the online war against religious people.  I mean, it's one thing to criticize a group for willfully ignoring advances in science and learning, attempting to limit peoples' rights, and being generally negative.
But really, is it any more fair to criticize ANYONE with religious beliefs at all based on the actions and beliefs of the few?  In ADF I find people who are intelligent, who evaluate information logically and open-mindedly, whose world views and beliefs are well-informed.
Every time I see some snide motivational poster created by athiests to criticize religious people, it makes me sad, as the main problem these people are rallying against is one of their own biggest issues.  Open-mindedness and tolerance...

Hip Hop and other stuff

So, does anyone else see Hip Hop as the modern heirs of the classic Bardic tradition?

Think about it, there are challenges, duels and competition, both decided on artistry, vocabulary, delivery, and believe it or not, what could be called WISDOM.

I'm serious, if you don't believe me, really listen to some Wu Tang Clan.  Really listen.  Some of the performers in this genre are absolute geniuses.

Better yet, check out Buck65, Dose One, and anyone ever associated with the Anticon label.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Music and Shows

Things are good, I'd say.  Moneywise, we're a bit behind, but we should be catching up pretty quickly.  Mostly, I'm excited about MUSIC.
We're playing tomorrow night at CBR's in the Brewery District (that's in the same building as CD101, just around to the back, on S. Front St.).  We're gonna be debuting the new song, Trisk, which has really come together into something I'm extremely proud of.  If I can manage to not fuck up the words, it'll be alright.
Also, yesterday morning I received an email from a guy running Metal Mondays at Victorian's Midnight Cafe, so we're going to be playing there the 27th of this month.  Mostly I'm excited that Victorian's seems to really take care of their entertainers:  free food, free pop and coffee, and one free drink-drink.  That's pretty nice really.  Headlining band and the top drawing band both get paid, and the top-drawing band goes on to Bernie's to open for a national act coming through.
Really, I can't WAIT to open for some lame underground national band.  We'll confuse EVERYBODY.
